Woodpeckers – Year 1

Welcome to the Woodpecker Class!

Hello, my name is Mrs Cole and I am very excited to be teaching Year 1 this year. I have been teaching for ten years now and this is my third year at Coates. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing and spending time with my family. I particularly enjoy days out to the beach or a picnic! We have lots of exciting new things to learn this year - I can't wait!

We have some really interesting topics to look forward to this academic year:

Useful information

  • Weekly homework challenges include: spellings, reading, Bug Club and work set on Google Classroom.

  • Children are expected to read at home 5 times a week and bring their reading book to school every day.

  • Reading books: These are linked to our RWI phonics scheme. Children will bring home a black and white RWI book every Friday and a coloured, linked RWI book every Monday. Once children have completed the RWI scheme they will move onto colour banded books.

  • Our P.E. days are on Monday and Tuesday so please can children come to school in their P.E. kits.

  • If your child is having a school dinner then please share the different options available with them so that they know whether they are having the meat, vegetarian or pick and mix option.

  • During the Summer term the children will complete their phonics screening check. This is a National test which all children in Year 1 are required to complete. We will be working towards this throughout the year. More information to follow.

We have a brilliant year ahead and we are really looking forward to working with the children and supporting them in their learning.  If you have any questions then please let us know.

Many thanks,

Mrs Cole
